Clarys’s Song

13 Mar 2016 at 20:14 (Random Randomness, Translations) (, , , , )

I seem to have this terrible habit of killing off my protagonists’ parents (count: 5/6 protagonists so far). Since Kiki has a song mourning the loss of her father, I thought it would be nice for Clarys to have a song too. Evil. I have no creativity: Clarys and Kiki both lost their mothers when they were babies, and then their fathers when they were children. I’m terrible.

Because I cannot compose melodies to save my life, I used this lovely lullaby sung by the amazing Erika Ferris. I hope it is not considered disrespectful to compose alternative lyrics for a traditional folk song.

Now I have a feeling my lyrics have grammatical/vocab mistakes in them. If any of them are a case of “This REALLY doesn’t mean what you think it means,” please do correct them. If, however, they can be excused by poetic licence and/or that fact that this song would have been written by a ten year old girl, please do so! Writing lyrics in a language you are not proficient in is hard enough, but to get them to fit to a melody is even harder. So please don’t rain on my parade except to save me from looking stupid. If you want to record these, it’s fine, but be sure to check with a native speaker that the lyrics are okay before you do ๐Ÿ™‚

I might draw a picture to go with this, but it’s been a super long time since I drew a proper piece, so I dunno.

Hoshi o miagete,
futari de yozora o
mitsumeta to omoidashite,
kokoro ga itai.
I look up at the stars,
and I remember how the two of us would watch the night sky together,
and I feel a pain in my heart.
Hoshi no katachi
wa ai no nagare o
tadoru deshou ka? Namida
tsugi tsugi chiru.
Will the pattern of the stars trace
the flow of my love?
My tears fall one by one.
ใŒใšใฃใจๆ˜ ใ‚‹ใ€‚
Ima, shizukesa
ni hitori de tatteru.
Namida ni hoshiakari
ga zutto utsuru.
Now I stand alone in the silence.
My tears will forever reflect the starlight.
ใŒใšใฃใจๆ˜ ใ‚‹ใ€‚
Namida ni watashi no ai
ga zutto utsuru.
My tears will forever reflect my love.

Round 13 — September 2005 Issue

A typhoon is coming! Now, just in case, Maya and Pearl can think of nothing but preparing for it. In the middle of this, is Phoenix too busy and worn out?!

Phoenix: Uhhh… Is it morning already? I’m so hungry…

Maya: Pearly! Quick! Let’s batten down this window, too!

Pearl normal Yes, Mystic Maya! Here are the hammer and nail.

Maya stoked Great job! Let’s do this!

Phoenix sweating W-what are you doing this early in the morning?

Translation note: the characters use the English phrase “new music”, so the bit when Pearl says “‘new’ means ‘NEW'”, she’s saying ๆ–ฐใ—ใ„ (atarashii, the Japanese word for “new”) for the second “new”.

Round 12 — August 2005 issue

It’s finally the height of summer! Even Phoenix is rushing to get out (perhaps being forcefully taken out by Maya?). So with the usual members, it’s off to the sea!

Pearl: Ah! I just saw it! The sea!

Maya: Isn’t it! Mr Gumshoe, how long until we get there?

Gumshoe: 15 minutes, if I ignore all the red lights and go at full speed.

Phoenix: Um, please drive safely, Detective Gumshoe.

Translator’s note: I don’t really want to localise these anymore, so I’m doing a straight translation, keeping the Japanese setting, but using the English names to make it easier to follow for fans of the English release. Maya’s favourite food in the Japanese release is miso ramen.

[Picture text]
Phoenix: If you’re not actually buying anything, go home.
Edgeworth: Hm, I’m thirsty though…
Phoenix: Just because Maya is getting the tea and things out, it doesn’t mean this is a coffee shop.
Edgeworth: Wright’s stinginess…

Round 1 – September 2004 Issue

Lately, Takumi-san has been asked about the the situation at the Wright and Co Law Office. Are Phoenix and Maya the same as ever..?!

Maya: Long time no see, everyone!

Page 38 โ€” Year’s End

17 Jan 2015 at 20:40 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Cultural notes: If you speak Japanese, you may know that the months are boringly named “month one”, “month two”, and so on, but the months have traditional names as well. The traditional name for December is Shiwasu. It is written ๅธซ่ตฐ, which uses the characters “priest”/”master” and “run”, the meaning of which is often said to be that December is so busy, that even the priests are running about in a hurry. You can read more here.

There is a punny bit, where Maya uses another character for master ๅฃซ, which also has a reading of shi, but has the meaning more of a person qualified to do a job. For instance, the word for “lawyer”, bengoshi, uses the character: ๅผ่ญทๅฃซ . In this case, I have written it in uppercase: SHI.ใ€€
The official name: Shiwasu = ๅธซ่ตฐ
Maya’s version: SHIwasu =ใ€€ๅฃซ่ตฐ

I do wonder how she was able to communicate this with just the spoken word.

Round 16 – December 2005 Issue

December is also called “Shiwasu”, because the month is so busy that even the masters were thought to have run around in a hurry. Phoenix’s first thought when he hears “master” is, of course, “that person”…

Maya: *huff huff* I’m back! *huff huff*

Phoenix: Welcome ba– Huh? What’s wrong? You’re out of breath.

Round 11 – July 2005 Issue

The season is changing, and it’s starting to feel more and more like early summer weather. Phoenix’s friends think that he always has the same look, so of course, he’ll be having a proper change of wardrobe now?!

Phoenix: Hello, I’m back!

Pearl: Welcome back! Please have some cold barley tea!

Phoenix: Thank you. This will refresh me.

Page 26 โ€” Golden Week

17 Jan 2015 at 20:29 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Translator’s note: Golden Week is a week-long holiday in Japan. I don’t even know how to go about localising this one, so you’re getting the Japanese version.

There were a few places I got stuck and had to guess at the meaning.

Mayoi = Maya, Harumi/Hami-chan = Pearl/Pearly, Naruhodou/Naruhodo = Phoenix/Nick, Mitsurugi = Edgeworth, Mei = Franziska, Yappari = Larry, Tonosaman = Steel Samurai, Nanja = Jammin’ Ninja.

With the excitement of the long holiday in sight, Mayoi-chan and Harumi-chan can think of nothing else. What kind of Golden Week are they going to have at the Naruhodou Law Offices?

Mayoi: Well then, I don’t suppose we can go to the zoo and the theme park?

17 Jan 2015 at 20:18 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Translation by Hikari Kaitou

Translator’s Notes: “Around the time when all the flowers were in bloom.” Flower viewing season is kind of a big deal in Japan where a lot of people make a point to visit parks with flowering trees and hold picnics and drinking parties under their branches. But it’s not a thing here in the US like it is in Japan, and since I’ve chosen to localize this translation, I’m taking slight liberties here.

“Miss Nuribilge” This is such an unusual sounding name that I figured it had to be a cultural reference of some sort, but the only possibility I could find was a male Turkish screenwriter/director. Not sure what connection they were trying to make here, so I’ll leave it alone.

Round 6ย โ€” February 2005 Issue

Perhaps due to an ongoing string of chilly days, Phoenix finds himself coming down with a cold. While reminiscing about his history with colds, he comes to realize a certain truth..?! And now in our third installment, is it finally time that a certain person who’s so far only been mentioned by name to make a proper appearance?!

Page 24 โ€” First-Years and Rookies

30 Dec 2012 at 21:41 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Notes: In the Japanese version, Payne’s name is Auchi, which is a play on “Ouch”, hence Payne/pain. The puns at the end are “Couch” and “Pouch”, which I tried to make funny English equivalents of in this localisation.

First-Years and Rookies.

Round 9 โ€” May 2005 Issue

Spring has arrived, and it appears to be the time when many people are starting their new lives. On this occasion, Phoenix and Maya are waiting in the cafeteria, when Prosecutor Edgeworth appears before them. They go from talking about rookies, to talking about a person from the distant past?!

Edgeworth: This seat is free, I presume?

Maya: Well, it is the courthouse cafeteria. You’re more than welcome to sit here.

Phoenix: I have bad memories of this place. They’re only just starting to fade.

1 Dec 2012 at 19:26 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Notes: This one was pretty easy to translate; it was the localisation that got me! The best substitutes I could do for the countries were: China becomes Canada (I have no idea what their burgers are like), Shikoku (one of the islands of Japan, which really does look like a squashed Australia) becomes Hawaii and Las Vegas becomes Monte Carlo, which doesn’t even make sense, does it? The CSI reference goes out the window, all because LA and Las Vegas are too near to each other. Also, the reason there is no photo to go with this one is that there was no illustration, so I didn’t think it was worth posting the photo.

Round 15 โ€” November 2005 Issue

Ema Skye, who has not been to the Wright & Co. Law Offices for a long time, meets with Maya and Pearl for the first time, and they immediately hit it off. With all the commotion, is it any wonder Phoenix is getting a little flummoxed?!

ema Ah. Ahem. Hello.

Ema: Whoa! Ms Maya Fey! In the flesh!

Francis Cabrel โ€” Ami

28 Nov 2012 at 22:06 (Random Randomness, Translations) (, )

Ami cherche un autre ami perdu
Dans l’immensité des nues
Visages et corps inconnus.
A friend is searching for another friend who’s lost
In the vast expanses of the heavens
Faces and bodies unknown.
Rêveur cherche à retrouver son ciel
Du fond de la nuit appelle
Son étoile maternelle.
A dreamer is searching to retrieve its sky.
From the depths of the night
Calling its mother star.
Car il y a vingt ans un orage
M’a fait tomber de mon nuage
Et m’a laissé seul dans ce monde
For 20 years ago, there raged a storm
That threw me from my cloud
And left me all alone in this abandoned world.
Au matin d’un lointain voyage
Je suis tombé de mon nuage
Je n’ai jamais senti la terre sous mes pieds.
On the morning of a distant journey
I fell from my cloud
And I have never since felt the Earth beneath my feet.
Reviens, étoile aux plaines d’argent
Reviens chercher ton enfant
Avant qu’il ne soit géant
Come back, star of the silver plains
Come back and search for your child
Before he becomes too big
Avant qu’il ne se brûle à un feu
Qu’il ne se blesse à un jeu
Avant qu’il ne soit trop vieux.
Before he gets burned by fire
So he doesn’t get hurt in a game
Before he becomes too old.
Car il y a vingt ans un orage
M’a fait tomber de mon nuage
Et m’a laissé seul dans ce monde
For 20 years ago, there raged a storm
That threw me from my cloud
And left me all alone in this abandoned world.
Au matin d’un lointain voyage
Je suis tombé de mon nuage…
On the morning of a distant journey
I fell from my cloud…

I remember we studied this song for AS Level French. I think I was the only one who liked it (but then again, I was always the uncoolest person at school). I didn’t realise before how much this song matches up with Le Petit Prince, which is still my favourite book.

18 Nov 2012 at 17:49 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Notes: This chapter confused the heck out of me. A lot of the lines I had to guess at the meaning, but I hope the gist of it has got through unscathed. I’ll try to redo this translation once I’ve finished the rest of the pages.

There’s a joke in here about Gumshoe’s Japanese surname, which is ็ณธ้‹ธ (Itonokogiri). Itonoko (which is also their nickname for him) means a jigsaw (as in the tool) and nokogiri means a saw or musical saw (I didn’t even know there were such things). Hence the reason Maya asks if he used a jigsaw.

Notes: In the original, Maya and Pearl are speaking English. Since obviously in the English release, they already speak English, I have changed it to French. Japanese would probably have made more sense, but I think more readers would understand French ๐Ÿ˜€

In this episode, they are talking about the re-release of the first Gyakuten Saiban, which was originally a GBA game. It was re-named Gyakuten Saiban – Yomigaeru Gyakuten (Turnabout Trials – The Resurrected Turnabout) for the DS release. The Japanese version also has the ability to play in either English or Japanese, hence why Maya is learning English.

Page 22 โ€” White Day

1 Nov 2012 at 23:35 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Cultural notes: White Day is March 14th. It’s a chance for males to give a gift to females and return any favours from Valentine’s Day. Just like on Valentine’s, there are gifts for that special female, and then the obligation gifts, given to friends or as a social courtesy. Typically, sweets, biscuits and marshmallows are given.

The original names were Rumi-chan and Fumi-chan, which I have changed to Lara and Kara, to fit in with the LA setting. In the English release, Maya is fond of burgers, whereas in the Japanese version, her preferred food is miso ramen, hence the ramen extravaganza. Perhaps I should have changed it to burgers, what do you think?

Round 5 โ€” April 2005 Issue

Page 20 โ€” Valentine’s Day

1 Nov 2012 at 19:27 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, , )

Cultural Notes: In Japan, Valentine’s Day is celebrated differently from in the West. On this day, females give chocolate to males. A loved-one will get a special, often home-made, chocolate, a honmei-choko. Not-so-special males will get a giri-choko, an “obligation” chocolate, out of social courtesy or friendship. White Day is the day for males to return the favour to the girls.

The original name of the girl was Rumi-chan, which I have changed to Lara (see White Day page for more) to fit in with the LA setting.

Round 7 โ€” March 2005 Issue

There is a warmth between our two backs that I can surely feel.

“We can’t progress forward without losing something.”
This thought, too, is waiting to be revealed like a magic trick.[3]

Tracing along the railway, the frame carried a new town.
If I could only turn “goodbye” into a song, I could see you again wherever you are.[4]

[1] Literally “waved hands” or “shook hands”, but waved farewell sounds better.
[2] ๆฏ่กใ — Breathe heavily, pant. So I guessed at “gasping pain”. This whole line confused me, to be honest. I may have screwed up badly here.
[3]Not quite sure about the ็จฎใ‚’ๆ˜Žใ™ใ‚‹ bit, but I think it means “reveal”. zKanji gives a meaning for ็จฎ as: secret, inside story.
[4]Or “wherever I am” or even “wherever we are”. Hmm.
