Translation by Hikari Kaitou

Translator’s Notes: “Around the time when all the flowers were in bloom.” Flower viewing season is kind of a big deal in Japan where a lot of people make a point to visit parks with flowering trees and hold picnics and drinking parties under their branches. But it’s not a thing here in the US like it is in Japan, and since I’ve chosen to localize this translation, I’m taking slight liberties here.

“Miss Nuribilge” This is such an unusual sounding name that I figured it had to be a cultural reference of some sort, but the only possibility I could find was a male Turkish screenwriter/director. Not sure what connection they were trying to make here, so I’ll leave it alone.

Round 6 — February 2005 Issue

Perhaps due to an ongoing string of chilly days, Phoenix finds himself coming down with a cold. While reminiscing about his history with colds, he comes to realize a certain truth..?! And now in our third installment, is it finally time that a certain person who’s so far only been mentioned by name to make a proper appearance?!

Bridge to the Logic Fail

31 March 2013 at 16:03 (Ace Attorney, Random Randomness) (, , )

I’ve been replaying the Phoenix Wright trilogy recently, but there are just so many things in there that bug me. It seems court-records.net beat me to most of them, but having just finished Bridge to the Turnabout, there is one massive logic fail, I wonder how no one noticed it?

I understand that for the sake of storyline, sometimes you have to have some degree of logic-fail, but this is just monumentally stupid! The following contains spoilers!

Mayane Tayke – Ace Attorney

20 March 2013 at 00:19 (Ace Attorney, Random Randomness) (, )

As you may know, I’ve probably spent more on my Ace Attorney fangirlism than any other (excepting AD&D 2e (PS D&D 4e sucks royally)). So here is a fancase I’m collaborating on: Mayane Tayke Ace Attorney – Case 1 – Turnabout Museum.

Mayane Tayke Case One

You can read more about it at the official Gyakuten Sisters blog.

Hope you enjoy it! Case 2 due late summer.

Page 24 — First-Years and Rookies

30 December 2012 at 21:41 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Notes: I’m not even sure I translated the title correctly (doesn’t “first-year” and “rookie” pretty much mean the same thing? Also the kanji for rookie actually says shinjin 新人, which means “new face, newcomer”, but they’ve appended “rookie” as the furigana for it. Confused). Anyway, in the Japanese version, Payne’s name is Auchi, which is a play on “Ouch”, hence Payne/pain.

Round 9 — May 2005 Issue

Edgeworth: This seat is free, I presume?

Maya: Well, it is the courthouse cafeteria. You’re more than welcome to sit here.

Phoenix: I have bad memories of this place. That’s why I tend not to come here so often.

Maya: So do you ever occasionally, you know, have good memories of something, Nick?

Phoenix: It’s April, isn’t it? This year, too, it’s the time of year when all the rookies start coming to the courthouse.

Maya: This time, there really are an awful lot of people coming to the courthouse, huh?

Edgeworth: Certainly, there are many of my fellow prosecutors here, whose names I don’t even remember. It happens a lot.

Phoenix: At any rate, I’d really rather not remember my days as a rookie.

maya Eh? What happened? You still have bad memories of your client?

phoenix At any rate, it was a terrible debut.

Edgeworth: Ahh, as I recall… your first client was Larry Butz. What a guy…

Phoenix: And I’ve read the case files for YOUR first trial, too. That guy on death row…

Maya: Harry Butz was on death row..?

Edgeworth: At that time, we’d just dealt with a horrendous case.

Maya: Ahhh… is that right?

Edgeworth: However, no sooner had I dealt with that case, than I had to deal with another.

Maya: Mr Edgeworth, you must have had a really tough time with that, huh?

Edgeworth: The case itself wasn’t complicated. The criminal had given himself up, after all.

Maya: Huh? For real?! Why?

Edgeworth: There was a case that went unsolved. 15 years ago.

Phoenix: F-fifteen? The statute of limitations would be just about up, no?

Edgeworth: For now, I’m reading the court records… but it’s painful.

Maya: I see.

Edgeworth: They missed something in the investigation, and there was a mistake when assembling the case. Taking the wrong evidence by mistake, the prosecution’s closing statement didn’t make sense. Somehow, I ended up being thoroughly slated.

Maya: All the same, you would expect that if you took the wrong evidence by mistake.

Payne: Ahh. If it isn’t Mr Edgeworth.

edgeworth Ah… Hello.

That’s all I have at the moment. The rest will come sometime. Also, this is from over a year ago, so I knew a lot less grammar then than I do now, so please be patient while I update 🙂

Page 36 — Travelling

1 December 2012 at 19:26 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Notes: This one was pretty easy to translate; it was the localisation that got me! The best substitutes I could do for the countries were: China becomes Canada (I have no idea what their burgers are like), Shikoku (one of the islands of Japan, which really does look like a squashed Australia) becomes Hawaii and Las Vegas becomes Monte Carlo, which doesn’t even make sense, does it? The CSI reference goes out the window, all because LA and Las Vegas are too near to each other. Also, the reason there is no photo to go with this one is that there was no illustration, so I didn’t think it was worth posting the photo.

Round 15 — November 2005 Issue

Ema Skye, who has not been to the Wright & Co. Law Offices for a long time, meets with Maya and Pearl for the first time, and they immediately hit it off. With all the commotion, is it any wonder Phoenix is getting a little flummoxed?!

ema Ah. Ahem. Hello.

mayaAh! Come in, come in! You’re Ema, I presume?

Ema: Whoa! Ms Maya Fey! In the flesh!

21 November 2012 at 22:15 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Notes: In the original version of the game, Franziska was raised in the US. In the English release, she was raised in Germany. I have changed the parts where she speaks English to German.

Thanks to Hikari Kaitou for corrections. LOVE!

Round 5 — January 2005 Issue

At the Wright & Co. Law Offices, the cousin-duo, Maya and Pearl, are proposing a Christmas get-together. People who they had not seen for a long time invited themselves. Will the famous scene from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 2 come to a conclusion?!

Phoenix: Hey, Maya. What’s all this?

Maya: Get with the game, Nick! It’s ramen, of course! Duh!

Phoenix: Wh-what?! Why on Earth would you put ramen on top of a cake?! Read the rest of this entry »

Round 4 — December 2004 Issue

Maya: What’s up? You suddenly said “I want to see the lake!”.

Phoenix: Court isn’t until 10 o’clock, I think? I thought we could stop here for a bit.

Maya: Gourd Lake… Oh! This is where Edgeworth’s case was.

Phoenix: Yes. That, too. It’s a place of so many memories.

Maya: What? You shot someone here, too?!

Phoenix: No, no. When it gets to this time of year, I feel like coming here, for some reason.

maya Ahhh… I have a feeling it’s something romantic!

18 November 2012 at 17:49 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Notes: This chapter confused the heck out of me. A lot of the lines I had to guess at the meaning, but I hope the gist of it has got through unscathed.

There’s a joke in here about Gumshoe’s Japanese surname, which is 糸鋸 (Itonokogiri). Itonoko (which is also their nickname for him) means a jigsaw (as in the tool) and nokogiri means a saw or musical saw (I didn’t even know there were such things). Hence the reason Maya asks if he used a jigsaw.

Round 18 — February 2006 Issue

mayaYeah! Go it! Samurai Slap!

phoenix Uhh, Maya. Could you keep the volume down a bit? At least for today?

Maya: Nope. You won’t be able to keep me down, not today! It’s the “Steel Samurai 155 episodes-in-one-sitting re-run day”!

Phoenix: *Groan* I have some difficult paperwork to work on. I’m so busy, I haven’t had a thing to eat since morning.

Maya: It’s okay. Our lunch will be arriving very shortly.

Pearl: Waaaaaaaa!! Mystic Mayaaaaaaa!

Maya: W-what happened, Pearly?

Page 34 — Celebrate! Rise from the Ashes is on Sale!

2 November 2012 at 23:01 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Notes: In the original, Maya and Pearl are speaking English. Since obviously in the English release, they already speak English, I have changed it to French. Japanese would probably have made more sense, but I think more readers would understand French 😀

In this episode, they are talking about the re-release of the first Gyakuten Saiban, which was originally a GBA game. It was re-named Gyakuten Saiban – Yomigaeru Gyakuten (Turnabout Trials – The Resurrected Turnabout) for the DS release. The Japanese version also has the ability to play in either English or Japanese, hence why Maya is learning English.

Round 14 — October 2005 Issue

maya Bonjour, Monsieur Wright! Ça va?

phoenix Wh-what, Maya?

Maya: What it is, is this! If someone says “Ça va?” to you, you are supposed to say, “Très bien, merci. Et vous?”

Phoenix: But in reality, I’ve never actually seen foreigners exchanging greetings like that.

Maya: Ehhh. Well. In school, that’s what I learnt.

Phoenix: Maya, you go to school..?

Maya: How rude! I’ve learnt my French textbook completely by heart! Huh. Pearly!

Page 22 — White Day

1 November 2012 at 23:35 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, )

Cultural notes: White Day is March 14th. It’s a chance for males to give a gift to females and return any favours from Valentine’s Day. Just like on Valentine’s, there are gifts for that special female, and then the obligation gifts, given to friends or as a social courtesy. Typically, sweets, biscuits and marshmallows are given.

The original names were Rumi-chan and Fumi-chan, which I have changed to Lara and Kara, to fit in with the LA setting. In the English release, Maya is fond of burgers, whereas in the Japanese version, her preferred food is miso ramen, hence the ramen extravaganza. Perhaps I should have changed it to burgers, what do you think?

Round 5 — April 2005 Issue

maya Wooooooo. I’m stuffed!

larry So how was it? My Ramen First Course.

Maya: Hmm. Completely delicious!

Larry: If you say so! Edgey! Say something, can’t you?!

Page 20 — Valentine’s Day

1 November 2012 at 19:27 (Ace Attorney, Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, Translations) (, , )

Cultural Notes: In Japan, Valentine’s Day is celebrated differently from in the West. On this day, females give chocolate to males. A loved-one will get a special, often home-made, chocolate, a honmei-choko. Not-so-special males will get a giri-choko, an “obligation” chocolate, out of social courtesy or friendship. White Day is the day for males to return the favour to the girls.

The original name of the girl was Rumi-chan, which I have changed to Lara (see White Day page for more) to fit in with the LA setting.

Round 7 — March 2005 Issue

Larry: Maya! I’ve finished cleaning the toilet!

Maya: Really? Thanks, Larry!

Larry: So what should I do next? I’ll do it! I’d do anything for your sake… especially today.

Maya: Well, I’ve been thinking. This room’s layout could do with a change. Please could you do it for me?

Larry: Eh?

Gyakuten Translator

16 October 2012 at 19:23 (Ace Attorney, Random Randomness) (, , )

This is really crazy! As you might know, I am still in the process of translating my Gyakuten Saiban fanbook. I’m still working on it, and there are a few bits (mostly colloquial dialogue that the text books don’t think anyone needs to know). So I’ve been using the Bing Translator to help with these bits, and I was surprised to find…

Heh heh. Phoenix Wright. I wonder who compiles the databases for this.
